I’m sure we have all been there at least once and what an ordeal it can be. You arrive at the airport all set for a great holiday only to find your bags are missing. It is a situation which can cause great stress to many travelers.

A recent survey was undertaken to find out which airlines have the worst record when it comes to losing baggage. Twenty six airlines took part in the project all of which were European based. The survey was carried out over last winter ending on the last day of March. It was organized by the Association of European Airlines.

Topping the poll was Iberia Airlines who lost 19.2 bags per one thousand passengers. Air France came in a close second losing 18.9 bags per one thousand passengers. TAP Portugal came in third with 17.3 bags.

Despite still losing 15.6 bags per thousand passengers British Airways showed an improvement over previous figures. Previous losses were put down to the airlines new terminal five. Previous figures showed BA to be losing an astonishing thirty eight bags per thousand passengers.

It has been reported this week that the airline British Airways has asked members of staff if they would consider taking between one and four weeks leave (unpaid) or work for free for a period.

The airline currently employs over forty thousand people. Speaking on behalf of the company Kirsten Millard confirmed that the mail had been sent to staff. BA reported an annual loss of over four hundred million last month.

The chief executive of BA Willie Walsh stated that there were no signs of a recovery in sight for the airline industry. He spoke of working for thirty years in the airline business and never experiencing such a downturn before. He referred to the current position as a “crisis”.

Speaking on behalf of one workers union it was said that there was no possibility that staff could work for free. Ciaran Naidoo pointed to the large difference in salary between Mr. Walsh and regular BA workers as an example as to why it was easy for him to suggest such a thing.

Queen of Spain Featured in Airline Ad

Low cost Irish Airline Ryanair last week ran an advertisement in newspapers featuring an image of Queen Sofia (Queen of Spain). The airline was prompted to use the image after hearing that the Queen had traveled on a Ryanair flight.

The Royal Family were reportably none too pleased with the cheeky move by the airline. The headline in the newspaper read “Fly like a Monarch” with the airline commenting what an honour it was to have the Queen as a passenger on Spain’s fastest growing airline.

A spokesman for the Royal Family said that the Queen was upset by the advertisement. In what perhaps could be seen as a cynical effort to cover their tracks Ryanair pledged to donate five thousand euro to the Queens favourite charity.

The Royal Family refused to become involved in the ordeal rejecting any charity donation. The flight in question saw the Queen travel from Santander to Stansted using Ryanair. Her brother is currently in the UK having undergone heart surgery.

Traffic Drop in May for British Airways

Despite the optimistic view taken by many regarding the passenger figures for British Airways in April there was a decline in numbers reported for May last week. It seemed that April had bucked the trend for previous months and was perhaps pointing to a better future however that has now been put down as just a blip.

There was a six and a half percent drop in numbers when compared with May last year. Year on year comparisons were down for thirteen months before a 0.9 percent rise last month.

The recession has seen many people opting for holidays that don’t require air travel. British Airways have now cut their capacity by five and a half percent. The biggest decline has been in the first class passenger area which showed a drop of over seventeen percent compared to May last year.

If you plan on travelling to Spain this summer then take the time to check around various airlines for the best prices. There are some excellent deals out there at the moment.

So that Ryanair Toilet Charge thing was not a Joke?

After announcing the company’s first yearly loss in over two decades last year it seems that Ryanair are again looking for more unusual ways to make money. First mentioned a few months ago the idea of charging passengers for toilet use has again been put forward.

Speaking to the Guardian newspaper Michael O’ Leary has confirmed that Ryanair will be requesting that a credit card reader be installed on toilets by manufacture Boeing. He also said that the company is currently considering the removal of two of the three toilets currently on board Ryanair planes to make way for six extra seats. Hmmmmm.. comfortable…;-)

In defense of this idea he maintained that average flight times were around one hour so there was no need for so many toilets.  I think it’s safe to say that we can expect lots more of these cost cutting measures form Ryanair in the near future.

If you plan on flying to Murcia with Ryanair then keep an eye on any changes they are bringing in such as the recent plan to remove baggage handlers (still under consideration). Don’t end up paying more than you have to.

A spokesperson for jet2.com said that Alicante was still a hugely popular destination but the demand was just not there anymore for Tuesday flights. Readers of this blog will be pleased to hear that there is still a Murcia service on Tuesdays.

There are nine jet2.com routes from Blackpool at the moment with an Ibiza service just added. This runs twice a week.

The Spanish Government has taken action to help prevent decline in the countries tourism industry.  The Government has promised airlines who manage to increase numbers in the first half of the year tax incentives in the second half of the year as a reward.

The PM of Spain Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said the move was necessary to offer a helping hand to the countries tourism sector. Within the first six months of 2009 airlines must show an increase on numbers in the last six months of 2008 to qualify for the tax incentive. A tax cut of one hundred percent has been promised.

It is expected that airlines will then pass on the cuts to customers in an effort to boost business. Twenty million is expected to be spent by the Spanish Airport Authority on the project.

Not everyone has been in favour of the move with four airline groups issuing a statement saying the project was “confusing” and would not have a good impact on the industry.

Tourism in Spain employs over eleven percent of the population. Figure for the first quarter of 2009 show a drop of over sixteen percent on the previous year.
