It has been reported this week that the airline British Airways has asked members of staff if they would consider taking between one and four weeks leave (unpaid) or work for free for a period.

The airline currently employs over forty thousand people. Speaking on behalf of the company Kirsten Millard confirmed that the mail had been sent to staff. BA reported an annual loss of over four hundred million last month.

The chief executive of BA Willie Walsh stated that there were no signs of a recovery in sight for the airline industry. He spoke of working for thirty years in the airline business and never experiencing such a downturn before. He referred to the current position as a “crisis”.

Speaking on behalf of one workers union it was said that there was no possibility that staff could work for free. Ciaran Naidoo pointed to the large difference in salary between Mr. Walsh and regular BA workers as an example as to why it was easy for him to suggest such a thing.
